Eating sugar can lead to weight, mood and health problems, yet this knowledge does little to prevent us from wanting to eat it. The hard truth is that breaking an addiction to sugar requires us to stop eating it. Fortunately, the desire and taste for sugar will diminish within just one month, and the improvements in how we feel will be remarkable.
This video outlines the ground rules for becoming sugar-free. The primary goal is to eliminate added sugar from our diet for 30 consecutive days. To get started, Dr Becky suggests, we should grab a calendar and mark down our day one. We should also avoid packaged foods with sugar listed as one of the first three ingredients. Food companies often disguise sugar with different names, such as corn syrup, dextrose, maltodextrin, fruit juice concentrate and sucrose. When in doubt, it is best to do without. If we are not sure if a food contains sugar, we should not eat it.
